15 Reasons to get a pet rat
I have been lucky in my life to learn how wonderful rats can be as pets, but unfortunately, there are those out there who still have not learned how fun it can be to have a rat as a pet. Whether its the scaly tail or the "people hands", there are some that are offset by the thought of willingly allowing rats in there homes. In this article I would like to give some reasons why you should consider letting a rat into your home, and hopefully, your heart.
Rats are very intelligent.
With intelligence that surpasses that of the average dog, rats are very clever, smart and easy to train. Whether you want to potty train him or train him to nod when you ask "Do you love me?", rats are highly trainable, and enjoy being trained. You can even play games with your rats to test their smarts!
Rats don't take up a lot of space.
Besides a cage and some room to play, rats don't take up a lot of room.
They are easy to care for.
Rats are an ideal pet to teach your child some responsibility or if you just don't have the time or means to care for a larger pet like a cat or dog.
Rats are cleanly beings.
Rats are constantly cleaning themselves, running through their fur and scrubbing their ears. (Plus, it's really really cute!)
Rats are personable and friendly
When handled from a young age, rats are friendly and greatly enjoy human attention. I have had over 30 rats in my lifetime and I can say no rat is the same. Some are shy, curious, adventurous, or a little bit of all! Rats have even been known to play pranks on humans to get a laugh.
Rats enjoy affection, and give affection, too!
Rats can grow special bonds with humans and begin to show affection, etc. For example, my rats eagerly run to the cage door when I open it. Some rats will give you kisses and nuzzle in for a cuddle while you're relaxing. I had one rat that would run up my chest to give me a kiss on my nose. Also, when you are snuggling with a rat and are petting him they are known to brux, or grind their teeth. This is a sign of happiness and contentment. Although the human ear can't hear it, rats also laugh when they're tickled!
You can enjoy quality time with your rats in fun places
You can take your rats for a trip on the couch, to the backyard, and even the park! These type of activities stimulate your rat's brain which can make him smarter and more personable.
Rats are not costly to feed
Rat food is pretty cheap. When buying from the pet store, you can choose from mixed kinds that have dried corn, sun flower seeds, etc, or block food. The mixed kind are fun for your rat but gives him the option to pick and choose, which may mean he might not get all the nutrition he needs. You also have the choice to make your own rat food, but do not do so without consulting an expert. You can also give rats some human foods as treats. I must say it's pretty cute to watch a rat munch on a sliver of orange.
Rats are not costly to house or care for
Besides food and water, you will need a cage, a water container, and bedding, which are all pretty cheap to buy. It is also wise to have a running wheel or other toys. Some rats enjoy hammocks, too.
You can enjoy your rats while doing everyday things
Ratties are great at riding your shoulder! You can have your rats with you when your cooking, doing school work, or watching tv.
Rats have a short life span
Although to some this may not be a plus, it means that having a rat is not a major commitment and you will most likely outlive him and not have to worry about where he will go when you can't care for him any longer.
Rats are easy to find and cheap to purchase/adopt
Rats generally cost under $10 at most pet stores. You can also adopt at a local shelter, if they have any. There are also rat breeders out there that sell quality rats, but when quality goes up, so does the price.
Rats are legal to own everywhere in the U.S.
You can enjoy a pet rat in any state you live in!
Rats do not need to be licensed
Unlike dogs, you don't have to register your rat or purchase costly shots. A vet visit would only be necessary in the case that your rat is sick or he needs surgery. Do not breed rats without consulting an expert. Health risks may result.
Rats provide love to you and your family and enrich your home
Rats are very loving creatures and enjoy human companionship. If your rat has been handled since their youth they will love your attention and come running when they hear you come home. If you and your family give them a chance they will enrich your home in love and provide a unique bond you and your family can enjoy.

Awww - we had two pet rats when my kids were little. They indeed are great pets. Once I got over my 'oh no!' stage, I grew to love their gentle behavior & cute ways. Sweet hub, and informative! Welcome to HubPages!
